Ana Axpe’s work is deeply informed by the need for commitment, a duty to remember, a duty to bear witness, observe and investigate – in the face of oblivion and erasure. By systematically involving her image, her body and her body, and by emphasising the power of the document, she reads reports about civil war, conducts inquiries about madness, and throws herself into organising sitcoms. In their approach to the photographic medium, Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler attempt to better define the place of the onlooker. They formulate presentations, step back from the real, and cultivate make-believe, the way film teaches it. But where’s the action ? The viewer finds himself no longer looking at an image or a result, but in the heart of a process that he can activate as he wishes.
