Alexandra Bachzetsis proposes a new “framing” in order to deconstruct traditional and contemporary cultural codes. Touching upon rebétiko (popular Greek music originating from migrants), she questions our relation to gender and bodies in representation. On a large checkerboard, three players attract, miss and intermingle to recompose an iconoclastic vision.
Formed at the Scuola Dimitri, at STUK Arts Center (B) and DASArts (NL), Alexandra Bachzetsis circulates between dance, performance, visual art and theatre. Awards include: Migros Culture Percentage Award (2007), DESTE Prize (2011), Swiss Art Award (2011 and 2016), Swiss Performance Art Award (2012) and the Zurich Art Prize. Her work has been presented internationally notably: Kunsthalle Basel, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Tate Modern London, Jumex Museum Mexico City, 5e Berlin Biennale, (d)OCUMENTA 13, documenta 14, Centre culturel suisse. Paris, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne.
